Rest in Peace, Coach Jarrell

The life of JESS SCOTT "Coach" JARRELL came to an abrupt and tragic end December 31, 2010. He passed away at his hilltop home in the town of Wayne, W.Va., at the age of 73. Born and raised on Horse Creek, in Raleigh County, W.Va., Mr. Jarrell attended Marsh Fork High School, in the town of Montcoal, W.Va.. He initially attended Morris Harvey College (now University of Charleston) on a football scholarship, but later took his talents to Marshall University to play for the Thundering Herd. Upon his graduation, he successfully pursued a Master's degree while teaching and coaching at Wayne High School. He remained at Wayne High as Head Football Coach and Guidance Counselor until his retirement in 1984. Mr. Jarrell is the second-winningest coach in school history. However, "Coach" is perhaps best remembered as a lifelong mentor and friend to his former players and students. He was the son of the late Sid and Bertie Jarrell (nee Miller). He was preceded in death by his brothers Marshall, William J., Lemmie L., Sydney J., and Curtis N., and his sisters Mabel Wills and Linda Peters. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Carol S. Jarrell of Wayne; three sisters, Lora Lyons, Anna Jarrell, and Beulah Jarrell; and one brother Virgil; three children, Rachel Bartram, Sara Morrison and husband Paul, and Jess Scott Jarrell II; five grandchildren, Jack Dolance, Nick Dolance, Allison Bartram, and Trevor and Hunter Morrison; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Jarrell's character was exceeded only by his generosity and his extraordinary love for his family. His family was his life, and his life will continue on in the memory of his family forever. Funeral services will be conducted at the Wayne High School Gymnasium, 11 a.m. Saturday, January 8th by Pastor Michael Dillon and Paul Michael Booth, with burial following at the Bowen Cemetery, Wayne. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the high school. Arrangements by Morris Funeral Home, Wayne.
